Welcome Letter from the President
Dear Members and Future Members,
Welcome to the USS Kearsarge Association! Whether you are a longtime member, a returning veteran, or considering joining us, we are thrilled to have you be a part of this incredible community. Our Association is dedicated to preserving the rich history and legacy of the USS Kearsarge, a ship that has played a pivotal role in the United States Navy’s history. It is a place where veterans, family members, and supporters come together to celebrate the remarkable service of those who served aboard this legendary vessel.
The USS Kearsarge has had a remarkable history, transitioning from a Civil War-era sloop to a Kearsarge-class battleship in World War I, and later evolving into both an aircraft carrier and amphibious assault ship. It became a proud symbol of strength, resilience, and commitment throughout its service. Commissioned in 1946 as CV-33, the ship served with distinction in both the Korean War and Vietnam War. It was later reclassified as CVS-33, where it played a key role in anti-submarine warfare, and subsequently redesignated as LHD-3, focusing on peacekeeping and humanitarian missions. Over its decades of service, the Kearsarge was home to countless sailors, airmen, and personnel, all united by a shared sense of pride and duty.
The USS Kearsarge Association was founded with the mission of honoring those who have served aboard this iconic ship and preserving the bond of camaraderie that was forged during our time together on the Kearsarge. We strive to keep the legacy alive for future generations by ensuring that the spirit of those who served aboard the ship is never forgotten. The Association is a place where we can reminisce, support one another, and continue the great tradition of fellowship that began on the Kearsarge itself.
Our dedicated Board of Directors, made up entirely of volunteers, works tirelessly to keep the Association strong and active. Whether it’s organizing reunions, managing memberships, or maintaining our website, the board members are committed to preserving the Kearsarge legacy and offering a welcoming, engaging community for everyone who has a connection to the ship. Though we have faced challenges, including low attendance and declining membership, we have adapted, ensuring the continuation of the Association through newsletters, outreach, and a focus on staying connected.
As you explore our website, you’ll find ways to become involved, whether through attending events, contributing to our KearSaga newsletter, or helping us grow our membership. Your involvement ensures that the spirit of the USS Kearsarge will live on in the hearts and minds of future generations. We are always looking for new ways to share our stories, celebrate our service, and expand our community.
Thank you for your continued support of the USS Kearsarge Association. We look forward to having you join us in honoring the service, sacrifices, and stories of those who proudly served aboard the USS Kearsarge. Together, we will ensure that the history of the Kearsarge and its sailors is remembered for years to come.

With gratitude and respect,
CV Lindley
