Million Dollar Experience, D.E. Maddy
Dale’s story follows his journey from a farm in Illinois to a USS Kearsarge (CVS-33) during the Vietnam War. Despite his aversion to conflict, he served from 1967 to 1970, transitioning from civilian life to basic training, Class A school, and ultimately life at sea. Along the way, Dale shares the ship’s storied history—from the Civil War through WWII and Korea to its final days after Vietnam—and recounts memorable maneuvers, Far East liberty calls, and the people who shaped his adventure.
The Ballard Nineteen, Jerry Edward Smith
Eighteen names were engraved on the Ballard High School Vietnam Memorial. Ballard graduate and Vietnam veteran Jerry Edward Smith was stunned to learn how many classmates had been lost. Research revealed a 19th name missing for 48 years. This book shares the stories of all these men, including McAteer, Carter, and Schoderer, who launched from the USS Kearsarge (CVS-33) on November 9, 1966, in an S2-E “Stoof” and never returned.
