On December 19, 1945, the USS Kearsarge (CV-33) held a naming contest for its new publication. Nearly 90 creative submissions poured in—including suggestions like
Flat-top-ics, Cee Vee, Double Three, K Rations, and Third Sarge—but it was John W. Verbist (EM2c) who took the prize. His winning entry, “Kearsaga,” earned him a Parker ‘51’ pen and pencil set.
Published weekly, Kearsaga became a valuable source of news and camaraderie for the crew of the USS Kearsarge—written by, for, and about the sailors who called the ship home. In 1992, the Kearsarge Association adopted the same title for our member newsletter, preserving a proud tradition and strengthening the bond among those who served.
